One bright day, Lucy decided to take a walk in the woods that stretched behind her house. The smiling girl skipped along the soft grass to the whisper of trees and the birds’ sweet songs. Suddenly, cutting through all that lovely sound, floated a strange voice. Curious, she edged toward a nearby heap of junk—and there, half-buried, she spotted a tiny garden gnome.
“Hi there, kiddo. I’m Babble Benny,” the gnome said, his face drooping. “Nobody wanted me around because I’m different, so they tossed me out at the dump.”
Lucy was stunned to hear a gnome talk, but she felt sorry for him and decided to help. “Don’t worry, Babble Benny—I won’t leave you here,” she said. “We have a lovely garden. You’ll feel right at home.”
The gnome nodded eagerly, so Lucy lifted him from the ground and carried him home. Babble Benny chattered the whole way about his life and couldn’t be stopped. Smiling, Lucy promised him a fresh start and a family who’d love him no matter how much he talked. Babble Benny was thrilled to have a new home where he could tell his stories to anyone who wandered into the garden.
And so the chatterbox gnome’s new fairy-tale life began in Lucy’s garden, where every day brought fresh adventures and small joys.
One sunny afternoon, Lucy’s grandmother came to visit. As she strolled through the pretty garden, a strange voice drifted up from deep inside the maze of flowers.
“Hello, Grandma!” a voice called from the garden. Grandma looked toward the sound—and there she saw a tiny, grinning gnome peeking out from between the tulips.
“What on earth?” Grandma yelped in surprise.
“I’m Babble Benny, a garden gnome, and I’m here to brighten your day with my cheerful tales!” Babble Benny piped up, laughter in his voice.
Delighted, the gnome was all set to tell Grandma everything he knew. But she got so startled that she ran for the gate with a scream. “A gnome that talks? That’s some kind of trick!” she cried, hurrying down the street.
The chatterbox gnome called after her. “Grandma, don’t run! Your legs aren’t that fast anymore. You could fall and bump your nose!”
“Too bad she didn’t want to chat. It could’ve been fun,” Babble Benny sighed, and then he muttered to the ants marching along their little trail in the flowerbed.
The next morning, Babble Benny woke to the squeak of the garden gate opening. A girl Lucy’s age stood there. Her name was Veronica, and she was Lucy’s classmate. The girls were supposed to walk to school together.
“Hi, Veronica! Headed to school?” Babble Benny asked.
“Yes—but who are you? How do you know my name? And how are you even talking?” Veronica asked, eyes wide with curiosity.
“I’m Babble Benny, and I talk because I feel like it,” he said. “Yesterday Lucy told me her classmate Veronica would come by this morning and you two would head to school together. But before you go, I simply must tell you a story.”
“I once knew a schoolgirl who went to class every single day,” the gnome began solemnly. “One day her teacher said she was so smart she didn’t need school anymore—there was nothing left to teach her. So she stopped going forever and enjoyed endless time off.”
“What if my teacher says that to me?” Veronica wondered aloud.
“She definitely will—you’re very smart,” Babble Benny coaxed. “No point going to school. Stay here instead, and we can talk all day long.”
But Veronica suddenly bolted just as Lucy was coming out of the house. “Where are you going, Veronica?” Lucy called after her.
“Home. I’m never going to school again. Babble Benny said I’m so smart there’s nothing left for me to learn.”
Lucy shot Babble Benny a stormy look. “You chatterbox gnome! See what you’ve done?” she scolded and had to trudge to school alone.
Left alone in the garden, Babble Benny tried chatting with the sparrows flitting around.
That afternoon, when Lucy came home with her parents, the little garden gnome launched into his chatter. “Hi, everybody! Today I met a sparrow who asked for my autograph. I told him gnome autographs are extremely rare, but because he was so excited, I finally wrote a little joke on his wing,” Babble Benny began, laughing.
Lucy’s parents traded surprised looks, but they still listened, smiling. Babble Benny didn’t stop. He spun tales about enchanted sprites who taught him to dance hip-hop, and about how he tried to teach ants to play a tiny gnome harmonica.
Lucy’s parents were ready to head off to their chores, but the gnome kept going. “And then I organized a Gnome Olympics for the bunnies, where I ran with a bowl of fruit balanced on my head. Wild, right? And guess what—I won!” he finished, chuckling.
But the more Babble Benny talked, the more Lucy’s parents frowned, and the more his stories sounded like make-believe with no real truth behind them.
“Babble Benny, we get the feeling you’re making all this up,” Lucy’s dad said, his face serious.
Lucy watched Babble Benny, a little unsure, while he kept smiling. But when he saw Lucy’s parents’ solemn faces, his smile slipped away.
“Okay, maybe I embroidered things a little, but only to lift the mood,” the little gnome explained. “I just wanted to bring you a bit of joy and laughter.” Even so, Lucy’s parents were getting a little annoyed.
“We’d rather you tell us true stories, Babble Benny,” Lucy’s mom said, a touch of impatience in her voice. “Imagination is lovely, but real experiences matter too. And we have other things to do—we can’t listen to you all day.”
Lucy felt that the chatterbox gnome could make everyone laugh, but he was also a bit too uncontrollable. She wondered how she could make Babble Benny happy and keep his mischief in check at the same time.
“Babble Benny, I want to offer you something special,” Lucy said with a curious smile. “How about living in my room? Then we can talk about anything we like, and we won’t scare anybody.”
Babble Benny looked at her with eyes full of joy and excitement. “That sounds wonderful, Lucy! I’ll whisper stories and tell you my adventures all the way to bedtime.”
And from that moment on, Babble Benny became a resident of Lucy’s room, where he told her his chatterbox tales. And sometimes, when Lucy wasn’t home, he told all his stories to her toys, who listened happily. Lucy learned that while it’s wonderful to have a talkative gnome for a companion, it’s always important to find the balance between fun and responsibility. And so Lucy and Babble Benny went on, savoring every chattering moment they shared.
