Winter is a beautiful time with snow covering the ground like a white blanket and everything quiet and peaceful. But for forest animals, winter can be very tough. That’s why it’s important for us to help forest animals. Here are some reasons to care for animals during the cold months.
Food Can Be Hard to Find
When snow falls, much of the food animals eat gets buried under thick layers of snow. Squirrels, deer, rabbits, and other creatures might not find enough food to survive. We can help by providing nuts, dried fruit, grains, or hay to animals.
Water Can Freeze
In winter, water in streams and ponds often freezes. Animals need to drink, just like we do! If you have the chance, leave bowls of water in the forest or help animals find places where the water isn’t frozen.
Shelter from the Cold
Some animals need a cozy spot to hide from the cold. You can help by building small shelters or leaving piles of leaves and branches for animals to snuggle in.
Taking Care of Young Animals
Some forest creatures have babies in winter. The young animals are especially vulnerable and need our help. By helping them find food and warm shelter, you give them a better chance of surviving.
Learning More About Nature
When you care for forest animals, you also learn more about nature. You get to see how animals live, what they eat, and how they behave. It teaches us a lot about the world and how everything is connected.
How Can You Help?
Bird feeders: Hang feeders filled with a variety of seeds on trees.
When you help forest animals, you’ll feel great knowing you’ve made a difference. And the animals will be grateful for your kindness. Together, we can make winter a little easier and nicer for forest creatures!
