Far beyond seven hills and three deep rivers, there was a land full of surprises. Almost every day, a beautiful rainbow stretched across its sky, glowing with all its colors and bringing smiles to the faces of children and grown-ups alike.
But one day, something unbelievable happened—the rainbow lost all its colors and turned completely gray. No one in the whole land could explain how such a thing was possible.
In a tiny village beneath the mountains lived a brave little girl named Clara. When she noticed that the rainbow, which always appeared after the rain, was now colorless, it made her very sad.
“This just can’t be right. A rainbow is supposed to be bright and happy, not gloomy and gray!” she told herself. So she decided to get to the bottom of it and bring the rainbow’s colors back.
The next day, shortly after a rain shower, Clara set out toward the mountains. According to an old legend, if someone wanted to find the beginning of a rainbow, they had to follow the path where the very first sunbeams touched the ground after the rain. Clara held on to that thought and noticed that the sunlight was shining on a mysterious little hill by a huge boulder at the edge of the forest. That’s where she headed.
As she came closer, she saw a tall rock with a narrow crack leading inside. She had never heard of a cave hidden in that rock, but she courageously stepped through the opening.
The cave was cool, and tiny drops of water glistened as they slid down the walls. From somewhere deep inside, she heard a soft, murmuring sound that seemed to guide her farther and farther into the cave.
At last, she reached a chamber where a small stone statue of a fairy stood. At the statue’s feet lay an old, dust-covered umbrella. It wasn’t an ordinary umbrella—at the end of its handle there was a decorative piece shaped like a raindrop, and along its edges were faded patterns that must once have shimmered with every color you could imagine.
Clara picked it up and realized it was a magical umbrella and the secret of the rainbow was hidden inside it.
But now the umbrella was gray and lifeless. Tiny cracks ran along its surface, as if it were terribly tired and had used up all its strength. Clara looked around and noticed some ancient writing carved into the statue’s base. She couldn’t read the strange letters, but it seemed they described how the umbrella worked.
Then she remembered a story her grandma had once told her—about a magical umbrella that gave the rainbow its colors by soaking up people’s joy and love during the rain.
“Maybe it took in too many worries and sad thoughts, and that’s why it faded,” Clara thought. She began to wonder how she could give the umbrella its strength back. Suddenly she understood: if the umbrella needed joy, people had to give that joy to it. And if it was sad, no one could restore its colors by leaving it alone.
So Clara sat down in the cave and thought of all the happy moments she had ever lived through. She decided to share them with the umbrella.
She told it about how she loved playing with her friends in the garden, how excited she was when her dad gave her a hand-carved wooden toy horse, and how her grandma baked the most delicious jam-filled cookies in the world. The memories of all those wonderful times warmed her heart, and the cave seemed to grow a little brighter.
All at once, she felt the umbrella tremble gently, and a few faint streaks of color flickered across its surface. Clara smiled.
“It’s working!”
She kept going. She stroked the umbrella softly and began to sing a cheerful song—one her mom always sang to her. With every happy memory, new patches of color bloomed on the umbrella: green, yellow, orange, pink… The umbrella was slowly waking up.
After a while, it shone just as brightly as it must have long ago, and the whole cave filled with shimmering reflections, as if the rainbow itself were dancing there between the walls. Clara carefully tucked the umbrella under her arm and started back toward the cave entrance.
When she stepped out into the daylight, she took a deep breath of fresh air. At that very moment, a short summer shower began to fall, and the sun pushed through the clouds at the same time.
Clara opened the magical umbrella—and right above her, a magnificent rainbow burst across the sky, bright and bold. Its colors were richer and more vivid than any the land had ever seen. People in the village and all around looked up in amazement, their hearts full of joy at such extraordinary beauty.
From that day on, folks would say that if a person is cheerful and carries love in their heart, any umbrella can become a tiny piece of the rainbow—as long as they truly believe in the power of happy memories and are willing to share them.
And whenever Clara later ran into hard times, she would simply smile and remember that magical moment in the cave, the day she rescued the rainbow’s lost colors.
Thanks to her courage and her honest, glowing joy, the rainbow shone even more brightly than before, bringing light and hope to everyone—even on the cloudiest, rainiest days.
