In a beautiful pond, where the water sparkled in the sunlight and the reeds whispered softly in the summer breeze, there lived a swan named Lila. Lila was the most beautiful swan that had ever glided across that pond. Her feathers were snowy white, and her long neck curved gracefully as she floated on the smooth surface of the water. Lila was very proud of her beauty and often boasted about it to the other animals. She believed that everyone adored her because she was so lovely.
One day, an old turtle named Tilda appeared at the pond. She was a wise turtle who had seen and experienced many things in her long life. When she noticed that Lila cared about nothing but her own looks, she decided that she needed to stop the swan’s growing pride. She wanted Lila to understand what truly mattered in life.
“You are very beautiful, Lila,” Tilda said to the white swan, “but beauty isn’t everything, you know.”
Lila laughed. “You’re the one talking to me about beauty, Tilda? Just look at you—you’re slow and old. Your shell is covered with pond weeds and moss. I’m the most beautiful one here, and that’s what really counts.”
Tilda only smiled and replied, “Maybe one day you’ll understand, Lila. Maybe one day you will.”

A few days later, a new swan arrived at the pond. Her name was Annabelle, and she was even more beautiful than Lila. Her feathers were whiter still, and her neck was even longer. All the swans hurried over to her, and Lila realized that she was no longer the center of attention. Even though she tried hard to impress the others—spreading her snowy wings and stretching her long neck as far as she could—none of her friends seemed to notice her anymore.
Lila felt lonely and sad. She understood that her beauty was no longer bringing her any happiness. The other swans started to befriend Annabelle, and Lila was left all alone. She remembered old Tilda’s words and decided to go and find her.
“Tilda, you were right. My beauty doesn’t mean anything at the pond anymore. I’m lonely and unhappy. What should I do?” Lila asked, with tears in her eyes.
Tilda looked at her kindly and said, “Your beauty is only on the outside, Lila. What truly matters is the kindness in your heart and your ability to be a friend to everyone. Try being gentle and helpful to others. You’ll see—your inner beauty will shine much brighter than your feathers ever could.”
Lila took Tilda’s words to heart. She began helping the other animals around the pond, being kind and friendly. Soon she noticed that she had many new friends and felt happier than she had ever felt before. Even Annabelle noticed Lila’s inner beauty and became her friend.
From that day on, Lila knew that beauty was not the most important thing. What mattered was having a good heart and being a true friend. And so she lived happily and contentedly, never again forgetting the wise words of old Tilda.
