Kate was looking one afternoon into a large antique mirror that her mom had inherited from Grandma. The mirror stood in the corner of Kate’s room, its frame carved from dark wood with tiny ornaments in the shape of intertwined branches. Kate loved it and often played princess in front of it. Today, however, something was different—when she looked into it, she saw herself, but her reflection looked strangely serious and thoughtful. And then, all at once, Kate heard a quiet voice and words that seemed to come from somewhere behind the mirror.
“Kate, please, help us,” her image in the mirror whispered. “I’m your reflection, and I come from a magical mirror world. We need help because an evil wizard has cursed it, and now everything there is completely upside down!”
At first, Kate froze and could hardly believe her ears. But curiosity awoke in her heart instantly. She couldn’t leave someone in need, and she decided to help without hesitation. When her mirror image reached out and touched her, Kate felt herself being gently pulled inward—as if the glass itself rippled and drew her in.
Suddenly, she was standing inside that same antique frame, but everything around her was flipped. It was like looking at her own world, only everything was reversed—objects, signs, even the letters in books would surely be turned backwards.
Spellbound by the strangeness of this world, Kate stepped forward. She noticed that even the people she saw here behaved differently. A strange, unsettled feeling hung in the air. On one little street, a peculiar mirror-lady refused to lend her a bicycle, saying that in this world no one gives anything to anyone—they only take things for themselves.
“What kind of strange place is this?” Kate thought.
Even the trees weren’t green; their leaves looked like gray, shadowy reflections. Above her head, birds were flying. But how were they flying? They were upside down, with their backs toward the ground.
Kate walked along a path until she met her own reflection—a double who explained that what she had seen so far was only a small piece of what was happening in their mirror world. An evil wizard had slipped in some time ago and used the power of a very old mirror for his spells. He gained the ability to control everything behind the glass, and with it, he turned the entire mirror world inside out.
“Our people are unhappy,” Kate’s mirror twin said. “People stopped being kind to one another just because the wizard twisted their hearts. Please help me, Kate—that’s why I called you! I don’t have enough strength to face him on my own.”
Kate took her double’s hand in a friendly way, and together they set out toward the evil wizard’s mysterious stronghold. They walked through a mirror forest where everything seemed made of smoke—the trees swayed in the opposite direction, their roots grew as if from above and hung in the air. And instead of the sun shining in the sky, a dull, hazy glow of the moon hung there, even though it was clearly midday.
Kate marveled at all of this, yet her heart tightened with pity at the sight of the sad eyes of the people they passed.
At last, a dark castle loomed in front of them, decorated with sharp thorns. It, too, seemed to be built upside down—its main gate was up on the roof, and its walls were covered in mirrors. Every single mirror reflected Kate and her twin in a different way, until her head was spinning.
Suddenly, a heavy metal gate swung open in front of them, and they stepped into a stone hall.
The wizard was already waiting there. He was tall and thin, with a silver beard that reached almost to his knees and eyes as dark as deep caves.
“So you’re the rude little girls who think they can undo my spells?” the wizard hissed, his voice echoing through the hall. “This world is mine now, and no one will take it from me!”
Kate’s twin quickly explained to her that the mirrors’ power did not belong to the wizard alone. Every mirror, she said, also worked thanks to good feelings and mutual help. If someone looked into a mirror with bad intentions, the mirror’s power twisted. But if someone gazed into it with compassion and love, the mirror filled with clear, pure light.
Kate realized what she had to do if she wanted to save the mirror world.
She began pouring kindness and encouragement into all the mirrors—in the corridors, in the grand halls, even into the small decorative mirrors hanging on the castle walls. She smiled broadly, sang a cheerful song out loud, and reminded herself of what it felt like to be among friends and to love her family. She kept trying to imagine what it was like to show someone that they didn’t have to face everything alone.
Her words and thoughts bounced from mirror to mirror, and slowly something in the hall began to change: the glass grew brighter, and the gray tones faded. The wizard tried to resist and attacked Kate and her twin with his magic. But at that moment, other inhabitants of the mirror world joined them. They, too, suddenly felt hope and joy. Together with Kate, they raised their voices, strengthened her song, and hugged one another. Their laughter and good spirits started spreading through the entire mirror world. That was when the wizard’s dark power truly began to weaken.
The wizard grew furious, his dark eyes flaring with fire. But the people of the mirror world started to shine one by one with their own good energy, and so they broke the wizard’s curse. The power of the mirrors now served honesty, helpfulness, and kindness. Soon the wizard screamed in pain and fell backward through a great shattered mirror into the unknown. His dark magic broke for good, and the sky above the mirror world cleared. Trees sank their roots back into the earth, and their leaves turned green again. People began smiling at each other and helping one another without thinking of themselves first.
Suddenly, Kate felt a soft, warm touch—her reflection was calling her home because her task was complete. The people of the mirror world had been freed, and they promised they would help one another so the dark curse could never return.
Kate stepped back through the mirror and into her own room. When she looked into the antique mirror, she saw a happy face—her own. Her reflection smiled back at her. And Kate knew that their friendship would last forever, wherever the mirror might be—on this side or in the magical mirror world.
