Once upon a time, in a land full of magic and wonder, there lived a beautiful and kind princess named Eliza, who had won the hearts of everyone in the kingdom with her goodness and sense of fairness. Her greatest treasure was a precious ring that her grandmother had given her many years before. This ring was not only beautiful, but it was said to have magical powers—it was believed to protect the one who wore it from all evil.
One day, Eliza decided to walk to a lake that lay at the edge of the royal forest. The crystal-clear water of the lake was incredibly deep, and its bottom was a mystery to every living creature. The princess sat down on the shore and admired the beauty of nature around her. After a while, she slipped the ring off her finger and set it on a stone beside her so she could wash her hands in the cool water.
Just then, a magnificent deer burst out of the forest. Eliza was enchanted by its grace and majesty and ran after it. In her haste, she forgot all about the ring she had left on the stone. When she finally came back, the ring was no longer there. To her horror, she realized it must have rolled off and fallen into the deep lake.
Desperate, the princess announced that she would give half the kingdom and her hand in marriage to whoever brought her ring back. Princes from all over the kingdom, and even from distant lands, arrived to try their luck at finding it, but every one of them failed. The lake was too deep and too dark, and no one had the courage to dive into its icy waters.
In a small village on the edge of the kingdom lived a poor boy named Matthew. He was modest and hardworking, and he never shied away from a challenge. When he heard about the princess’s misfortune, he decided to try to find the ring. He believed that with courage and determination, even the impossible could be done.
Matthew went to the lake and stood before the princess. “Princess Eliza, will you allow me to try to find your ring?” he asked respectfully. Eliza, who had already lost hope, smiled at him and nodded. “If you can do it, I will be forever grateful,” she said.
Matthew dove into the water and swam down into the dark depths of the lake. He searched for the ring with all his strength, but time passed, and his lungs were almost out of air. Still, he refused to give up and kept looking. After a moment that felt like an eternity, he noticed something shining between the rocks on the lake bed. It was the ring!
With great effort, Matthew pushed himself back up to the surface, the ring clutched tightly in his hand. Eliza greeted him with tears in her eyes and hugged him gratefully. “You are my hero,” she said with a smile. “As I promised, I will give you half my kingdom and my hand in marriage.”
Humble as he was, Matthew accepted the princess’s offer and became her loyal companion. Together they ruled the kingdom with kindness and justice, and the ring that Matthew had rescued from the depths of the lake remained forever a symbol of courage, love, and loyalty.
