The Lost Magic River

A gentle children’s fairy tale about a lost magic river, two brave siblings, and a lonely goblin who discovers the power of kindness and friendship.

Once upon a time, in a tiny village hidden deep inside an old forest, there lived people who were always healthy and full of joy.
Their secret was a magic river that flowed right through the middle of the village. Its water was as clear as crystal, and anyone who drank from it felt strong, awake, and brimming with life. The villagers knew this was no ordinary river. They believed a powerful force lived in its waters and watched over them.

But one day, something strange began to happen. The river started to shrink, and its current slowed to a trickle, and then, at last, it disappeared completely. The villagers suddenly had nothing to drink. And worst of all, without the magic water, people began to grow weak and ill. Day by day, things got worse, and a heavy sadness settled over the village like a dark cloud.

Soon, only two children in the whole village stayed healthy: a brother and sister named Emil and Natalie. Emil was a brave, curious boy, and Natalie had a keen mind and a very big heart. They both knew they had to do something to save their family and friends and bring the river back home.

So one morning, just as the sky was turning pink, they decided to set out on a dangerous journey, following the river’s empty bed upstream to find out why the water had stopped. Their parents were too sick to go with them, so the two of them had to be brave on their own. The riverbed was dry and full of sharp stones that hurt their feet, but Emil and Natalie refused to give up. They walked through dark, whispering woods, climbed steep, rocky hills, and struggled through sticky, muddy swamps.

After several long days of traveling, they finally reached the river’s source. There, in the heart of the mountain, they found something they never expected. Standing in front of them was a nasty little goblin, his eyes glowing with mean, green mischief. In his hands, he clutched a small glass jar, and inside it twisted and curled the very last stream of water from the river.

“Who are you, and what are you doing here?” the goblin hissed when he saw them.

“We’re children from the village that depends on this river’s water,” Emil answered bravely.
“Why did you steal our water from us?”

The goblin sneered. “This river is powerful. And I want that power for myself. Once I control it, I’ll be the strongest creature in this whole forest!”

Natalie suddenly understood that what fed the goblin’s meanness was his loneliness. So she spoke to him with a kindness he had never heard before.
“Goblin,” she said gently, “we see that you want to be strong. But don’t you think it’s better to be loved than to be feared? If you come back to the village with us and let the river flow again, everyone will see you as a hero. You could have friends. You’d never have to be alone again.”

The goblin froze, surprised by her words. No one had ever cared about how he felt before. He stared at the children, frowning, thinking hard.

After a long, quiet moment, he said at last, “But how do I know the villagers won’t treat me like an enemy?”

Emil smiled at him. “If you let the river run again and come back with us, we promise we’ll help them see who you really are.
We’ll make sure they welcome you as a friend.”

The goblin lowered his eyes and thought for a little while longer. Then, with a deep, shivery sigh, he opened the glass jar and poured the thin stream of water into the dry riverbed. In an instant, the tiny trickle burst into a rushing river, swirling and sparkling as it filled the empty channel. The water hurried down the mountain, racing toward the village where the people were waiting with all the hope they had left.

When Emil, Natalie, and the goblin finally returned, everyone stared at the strange newcomer walking beside the children. But as soon as they saw the river pouring through the village again, bright and full and alive, they forgot their fear. They cheered and laughed, celebrating the return of their strength and health. The villagers welcomed the goblin into their lives, and in time he found true friends who taught him about the power of kindness and friendship.

From that day on, the river never ran dry again. The goblin, Emil, and Natalie became the best of friends. To the villagers, the children were heroes who had saved them with their courage and their wisdom.

The magic river flowed once more, bringing health and happiness to everyone who drank from it. And who knows? Maybe, somewhere far away and deep in the forest, that river is still flowing even now.
