In the soft shade beneath a tall fir tree lived a little bunny named Long-Ears. He was small, fluffy, and unbelievably cute. But what made him truly special—what everyone found most amazing—was his pair of exceptionally long ears. Thanks to them, he could hear even the faintest whisper of the wind or the tiniest footsteps of a beetle beneath the leaves. All the forest animals knew that if they had a worry or needed help, they could count on the bunny with the extraordinarily long ears.
One day, Loxa the fox was getting ready for a tasty dinner. She had gathered sweet wild berries and found a few mushrooms, and was looking forward to her feast. Suddenly, a powerful storm caught her by surprise, and in a hurry, she left her harvest by an old stump and dashed to safety. After the storm, she discovered that all her gathered food had vanished! Who had taken her stash? Worried and upset, she cried out to the forest, “Help me, please!”
Long-Ears, who was always alert, immediately picked up on her distress. With his sharp hearing, he started searching for sounds that might lead him to Loxa’s missing treats. And sure enough, he soon heard two little rodents giggling and munching on something delicious. The bunny hopped over and explained that those tasty forest snacks belonged to Loxa. Embarrassed, the little rodents returned what was left and scampered away into the depths of the woods. Loxa was so grateful that she invited Long-Ears to join her for a fragrant tea made from woodland herbs.
Rysha the squirrel was very hardworking. She spent all day scampering around the forest collecting the tastiest nuts, carefully storing them in her safe hideaway inside a hollow tree. One day, however, she accidentally wandered into a strange, far corner of the woods she’d never seen before. There were so many trees, bushes, and thick leaves that she completely lost track of the path home. Tears welled up in her eyes and she began to call out desperately, “Hello! Can someone help me?”
Nearby, Long-Ears was bounding along, and he heard her cry for help as clearly as if she were right beside him. He knew exactly how to find Rysha and rushed toward the sound of her voice. He soothed her, and together they set off to find her way home. The bunny perked up his long ears, listening for the bubbling brook that ran close to Rysha’s secret hideout. It didn’t take long before they reached the stream, and from there, Rysha recognized the way home. She was able to return with her fresh nuts and thanked Long-Ears with the biggest ones she had.
One night, with the silver moon casting a magical glow across the woods, a quiet sob drifted through the leaves. Long-Ears—who never slept with his ears under the covers—heard a faint whimper from beneath a thicket. Without hesitation, he bounded over to see who was crying. It was a little hedgehog named Fern, who’d gotten lost at dusk and couldn’t find his way back home.
“I’m scared. I don’t know how to get back to my parents,” Fern sniffled.
The bunny placed a gentle paw on his shoulder and reassured him,
“Don’t worry, Fern! I’ll perk up my long ears. I’m sure your parents are looking for you, and I’ll hear them. Hold onto my tail and I’ll guide you.”
So Long-Ears and Fern walked together along the shadowy trails. Before long, the bunny heard the soft voice of Fern’s mother calling out. Following her calls, they arrived at the hedgehog family’s home beneath the roots of an old pine tree. Fern’s parents were overjoyed and thanked the bunny for his magical ears, which always seemed to pick up even the slightest sound.
As days passed, whispers about the bunny’s incredible ears spread throughout the forest. Everyone knew they could rely on his help—not just because of his wonderful hearing, but also because Long-Ears was kind, friendly, and always ready to hop to the rescue of anybody who needed him.
