Peter and Jana were the parents of ten-year-old Hugo. They loved nature and adventure. They wanted to show their son the beautiful wilderness in their country, so one sunny morning they decided to take Hugo on a hike in the mountains. With backpacks full of food, a map, and a compass, they set off, not knowing what kind of adventure was waiting for them.

The forest was beautiful. Sunlight barely slipped through the tall trees, creating a magical play of light and shadow. The leaves whispered in the rhythm of a gentle breeze. Birds sang cheerful songs, and little animals hid in the bushes, curiously watching the family as they passed by.

Hugo was thrilled by the forest and the hike. He ran around, examining every stone and every strange-looking plant. His eyes shone with curiosity and joy. His parents watched him with smiles on their faces, happy that they could spend time together in such a wonderful place.

As they went deeper into the forest, a huge, furious bear suddenly appeared in front of them. Its eyes burned with anger, and it raised its massive paws above its head to make itself look even bigger. In that moment, it roared so loudly that Hugo was knocked to the ground. With terror in their eyes, the whole family spun around and started to run. The bear charged after them. Its heavy footsteps thundered through the forest, and Hugo and his parents ran without stopping.

In the panic, Hugo tripped over a tree root and fell. His parents, blinded by fear, didn’t notice and kept running. When they realized Hugo wasn’t with them, it was already too late. The bear was standing over the boy, ready to attack.

Hugo lay on the ground, his heart pounding like a bell. He closed his eyes and waited for the worst. At that very moment, a large gray wolf burst out of the bushes. Without a second’s hesitation, the wolf leaped between the bear and the boy. He began to fight the bear, shielding Hugo with his own body.

The battle was fierce. The wolf was smaller, but his courage and speed gave him an advantage. After a while, the wounded bear backed off and finally ran away deep into the forest. The wolf turned to Hugo. The boy looked at him in amazement, but he felt no fear. In the wolf’s eyes, he saw kindness and understanding. He trusted that the wolf would not hurt him.

“Thank you,” Hugo whispered. The wolf slowly came closer and gently nudged him with his nose, as if telling him to follow. With the certainty of an animal that knows every inch of the land, the wolf led the boy through the forest. Hugo walked behind him. He felt safe, even though he had no idea where the wolf was taking him. Then he heard voices calling his name. It was his parents, desperately searching for him.

When his parents saw their son coming out of the forest alive and unharmed, their joy was endless. Then they suddenly froze. Right behind their son stood a big wolf. They wanted to pull Hugo away, but the boy calmed them.

“Don’t be afraid. He saved me and brought me back to you,” he explained.

Just then, the police officers whom the parents had called arrived. When they saw the wolf, they raised their guns.

“No! Don’t shoot!” shouted Hugo, stepping in front of the wolf. “He’s my friend. He saved my life.”

The officers lowered their weapons, surprised by the boy’s courage. His parents understood then that the wolf truly had helped their son. The wolf looked at Hugo, as if saying goodbye. Then he turned and vanished into the depths of the forest.

From that day on, Hugo often thought about his brave friend. He knew that somewhere out there was a wolf who would always be watching over the forest and its secrets.
