Beyond the deep green forest stood a sprawling ant colony, home to hundreds of thousands of ants. They were tiny, industrious creatures, forever busy—gathering food, collecting twigs, leaves, and other useful bits to build new parts of their home. Every ant pitched in, except one. His name was Lenny, and although he was supposed to be just as hardworking as the rest, he much preferred to lounge around, watching the other ants sweat and toil. Some even started calling him “Lazy Ant.”
“Help us, Lenny!” called the materials manager. “Carry these twigs to the entrance so we can make it stronger!”
But Lenny only grumbled, “It’s so hot… and those twigs are heavy!”
Other ants grew frustrated.
“Why do you never help us?” they asked, disappointed. But Lenny just turned his back and continued to do nothing.
Soon, the wise old ant queen came to him. Her long antennae swayed gently as she walked. She spoke to Lenny, kindly but firmly:
“Every ant is crucial for our home. If even one piece is missing, our colony will be weak, and it could all fall apart. Please help your sisters and brothers. It is your duty—and your honor.”
But Lenny just sighed.
“I’m just one of thousands. Nothing will change because of me.” And he flopped down under a big leaf to nap.
Everyone else kept working. The ants organized tasks: some gathered food, some guarded entrances, others moved precious eggs to safe chambers. Lenny was assigned a simple but vital job—he was supposed to build and secure a small wall at the entrance so other colonies couldn’t get in. But, true to his nature, Lenny didn’t bother. Time passed and the colony expanded, but that little part near the entrance remained unfinished and unsafe.
One day, a thick cloud swept overhead. A strange tension filled the air. The ants worked even faster, sensing trouble ahead. Sure enough—a battalion of foreign ants from the far side of the forest marched in. They were big and hostile, and quickly swarmed the unguarded entrance Lenny should have protected. No one stopped them. They slipped inside—no defenders, no fortifying wall—and soon filled the inner chambers. By the time the colony realized, the outsiders had taken over a huge section, destroying everything in their path. Even the bravest soldiers struggled to defend the tunnels and the storerooms. All the food was gone, and a newly finished wing lay in ruins.
Seeing the mess, Lenny was horrified. Even worse were the tired, silent stares from his fellow ants—it was clear this disaster was his fault. He was overwhelmed by shame and regret.
He jumped in to help chase away the enemy ants and to save what could be saved. It took a united effort, but finally the invaders were gone. Still, the damage remained—empty rooms where ants had once worked with pride.
“This didn’t have to happen,” said the queen after things calmed down. She looked at Lenny. “All you had to do was your part.”
For the first time, Lenny truly understood the importance of helping out. He saw the worn-out ants, their home broken in many places.
When it was time to rebuild, it was Lenny who worked hardest of all. By night, he hauled heavy pieces of wood and twigs. By day, he packed smooth clay to thicken the tunnel walls. He helped others, never complained, and everyone noticed his big change.
Slowly, the colony healed and was rebuilt into something stronger and safer than before. When it was finished, the queen called for Lenny again. This time, she smiled:
“You have done incredible work, Lenny. You have shown all of us that you are a valuable member of this ant family.”
All the other ants gathered around.
“We’re sorry we were angry at you,” said one. “But now we see you’ve changed—and you do more than anyone.”
Lenny blushed.
“Thank you for forgiving me. I’ll never forget how much we all help each other.”
And from then on, they stopped calling him “Lazy Ant” and used his real name—Lenny. Sometimes, when a lazy ant wandered into the colony, Lenny would patiently explain why everyone’s work was important. After that day, there was no laziness in the ant colony, because everyone understood what teamwork could accomplish. Most importantly, they protected their home, together, every day.
