In a small, cozy preschool in the middle of a pretty little village, there was a group of children who were always cheerful, playful, and full of energy. One day, when the kids arrived at preschool, something unusual happened. All the lunch ladies had gotten sick and couldn’t cook lunch. The children started to panic because without lunch they wouldn’t have any energy for their favorite games and adventures.
“What are we going to do?” asked Johnny when he saw how sad everyone looked.
Mark, the bravest of them all, suddenly had a great idea. “Why don’t we cook lunch ourselves?” he suggested. The other children stared at him in surprise.
“That’s an awesome idea!” shouted Lucy, her eyes sparkling. “But what are we going to make?”
Katie, who often helped her mom in the kitchen and had lots of experience with cooking, spoke up: “Let’s make vegetable soup and macaroni and cheese. It’s easy, and everybody likes it.”
The children split into groups. Johnny and Lucy went out to the garden to pick fresh vegetables—carrots, potatoes, onions, and peas. Meanwhile, Mark and Mike stayed in the kitchen to get a big pot ready and wash the vegetables. Katie, who knew the most about cooking, was in charge of the whole team.
Together the children chopped the vegetables into tiny pieces and tossed them into the pot of water. Johnny added a pinch of salt; Mike stirred the soup so it wouldn’t burn; and Katie made sure everything was going just right. After a while, the whole kitchen started to smell wonderfully delicious.
When the soup was done, the children started making the pasta. Katie explained how to cook the noodles just right and how to add the cheese so they would be tasty and creamy. The kids worked together like a real cooking team and enjoyed every single moment of it.
At last, lunch was ready. The children spooned the soup and pasta onto plates and proudly invited all the kids and teachers to come eat. The teachers were surprised and delighted. “This is incredible! Kids, you did an amazing job!” their teacher, Miss Martha, praised them.
All the children sat down at the table and happily dug into the lunch they had made themselves. It was the best lunch they had ever had—not just because it was tasty, but mainly because they had cooked it together as a team.
From that day on, everyone at the preschool talked about how the children saved the day by making lunch. And even though the lunch ladies soon got better and came back to work, the kids knew that if they were ever needed again, they’d be ready to help. And that’s how the story ends for the little preschool heroes who proved that with courage and friendship you can handle just about anything.
