Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there lived a hen named Gertie. She wasn’t just any ordinary hen—Gertie dreamed of doing the impossible. More than anything, she wished she could fly. Every day, she watched the birds gliding through the sky and longed to join them. She asked her friends down on the farm if they’d help her, but they only shook their heads and said, “That’s impossible, Gertie. You’re a chicken—you can’t fly.”

But Gertie was determined to make her dream come true. She decided to make her own wings to help her soar. She gathered feathers that had drifted down from birds flying over the barnyard and pieced them together, crafting a pair of mighty wings. She worked day and night until, finally, her masterpiece was finished. Gertie could hardly contain her excitement. She couldn’t wait to put them to the test.
With her new wings, Gertie climbed to the top of the tallest hill in the countryside to see if they would really work. The other animals tried to talk her out of it. They didn’t believe she’d make it off the ground, and they were worried she might get hurt.
But Gertie didn’t listen. She ran straight toward the edge of the hill and leaped. She flapped her wings as hard as she possibly could. And to her amazement—and everyone else’s—it worked! Gertie was flying.

The little hen was overjoyed. She soared through the sky, higher and higher. Her wings were strong, and for a moment, she felt like she could fly forever. Gertie glided above the village and over the nearby town. People everywhere stopped in their tracks and stared in awe at the flying hen. Nobody could believe what they were seeing. Never in their lives had they seen a hen take to the air. Gertie was bursting with pride, and her friends back at the farm cheered her on.
Gertie flew for hours, until she was too tired to keep going. When she finally landed, her barnyard friends rushed to greet her, with shouts of praise from every side. Best of all, the animals were inspired by Gertie’s courage and determination. They immediately started dreaming up their own wild ideas and wondering what they might be able to achieve.
From that day on, everyone knew Gertie as the Flying Hen. Her story spread far and wide, inspiring folks everywhere. Whenever someone felt down or thought their dreams were simply impossible, people would share the tale of Gertie, reminding them that with hard work and a brave heart, anything is possible. At last, Gertie was living her dream—and she was happier than ever.
