Emma was a little girl with big eyes full of curiosity and a deep love for nature. More than anything in the world, she adored walking in the woods, where she could spend hours studying every single leaf, every tiny twig, and every scent floating in the air. Her favorite place was a beautiful leafy forest, where tall oaks, beeches, alders, and birches rose side by side like ancient guardians. In this forest she felt completely at home, as if the trees were her old, loyal friends.

Emma had a strange feeling that these trees were not ordinary trees. Whenever she wrapped her arms around a trunk, she felt a faint trembling, as if a small forest heart were beating beneath her palms. The trees seemed to whisper softly to her, their leaves gently swaying in the rhythm of the wind, and Emma felt as though she were part of an ancient, living symphony of nature.

One sunny morning, Emma went for her usual walk to her favorite forest. Her heart leaped with joy when she saw the familiar shapes of “her” trees in the distance. But before she could reach them, she heard a harsh noise coming from the woods—loud sawing and the sharp crack of breaking wood. Her heart skipped a beat in fear.

When she ran closer, she saw a huge lumberjack with a massive ax and a roaring chainsaw in his hands. Trees were crashing to the ground one after another, and tears welled up in Emma’s eyes. She couldn’t just stand there and let him destroy her forest!

She ran up to the lumberjack and shouted, “Stop! Leave my forest alone!”

The lumberjack looked down at her with a hard expression and laughed. “And what do you think you’re going to do, little girl? Go home. You don’t belong here.”

But Emma didn’t back down. “This forest is alive! These trees have souls. You can’t destroy them!”

The lumberjack only shrugged and waved his hand as if he were shooing away an annoying fly. When Emma still refused to move, anger flashed in his eyes. He stepped toward her and raised his hand as if to grab her.

At that very moment, something completely unexpected happened. One of the giant oaks standing nearby began to move. Its thick branches stretched out and wrapped themselves around the lumberjack’s chest, holding him tight. The man shouted in surprise, but before he could even catch his breath, another tree—a tall beech—leaned over and took him from the oak, lifting him in its branches.

The trees passed him from one to another, carrying him all the way to the edge of the forest. There, a slender birch caught him and, gently but firmly, tossed him right out of the woods. The lumberjack landed on the ground with a stunned look on his face, then scrambled to his feet and ran away as fast as he could, mumbling promises to never come back to that forest again.

Emma stood frozen in amazement. Slowly, the trees straightened back up, and their leaves rustled softly, as if they were thanking her for her courage. Her heart pounded with joy and relief—her beloved forest was safe.

Just as she was about to turn and head home, a soft breeze rose and whispered through the leaves. A calm murmur floated through the air, and Emma suddenly felt tiny roots, covered in velvet moss, gently curling around her ankles. The trees were trying to thank her for standing up for them.

At that moment, a single shining white leaf fell from the birch and drifted down through the air, landing right at Emma’s feet. When she picked it up, a strange warmth flowed through her body, and something magical happened. The rustling of the leaves changed into clear, understandable words. The trees had given her an incredible gift. Emma could understand the language of the trees.

“I always knew this forest was alive,” the little girl said with a smile.

From that day on, Emma felt an even deeper bond with the forest. She knew that her friends, the trees, would always watch over her—just as she would always watch over them.
