Dragon Without Wings

A touching children’s fairy tale about a dragon born without wings, clever kids who build him new ones, and a friendship that soars across the sky.

Drak Bez Kridel Rozpravka

In a magical forest, where the trees grew taller and greener than anywhere else and the streams were as clear as crystal and home to the biggest fish you could imagine, a baby dragon was born one day. This little dragon, whom they named Florian, was truly magnificent.
His scales shimmered in the sunlight like thousands of tiny diamonds. But he had one very special trait—he was born without wings.
In the dragon world, where flying was a very important part of life, this made Florian terribly sad. While his brothers and sisters soared high above the mountains and played in the clouds, Florian stayed on the ground and watched the sky with a heavy heart.

Every day, Florian tried to jump as high as he could, but he never managed to lift himself off the ground. When his siblings flew away, he was left alone, and he cried. One day, while he was in this unhappy state, a group of children who were playing near the forest found him. When they saw the little dragon with tears in his eyes, they ran to him at once and started asking what was wrong.

“Why are you crying, little dragon?” asked Susie, who always knew how to comfort others.

“I was born without wings,” Florian answered, his eyes shining with tears.
“I will never be able to fly like the other dragons. I’ll never see the world from the sky.”

The children looked at one another, deep in thought. They were clever and full of ideas, and right away they came up with a plan to help him.
“What if we make you a pair of wings?” suggested Johnny, who spent a lot of time hanging around his dad’s workshop.
“We know how to work with wood. Maybe we can figure something out.”

Florian wiped his eyes and, for the first time, gave the children a small smile.
“But how? Could that really work?”

“It can, for sure!” declared Matt, who was the smallest of them all but had the biggest imagination.
“You just have to trust us.”

The children measured Florian carefully, and as soon as they returned to their village, they got straight to work. Together in the workshop, they chose wood that was strong but light as a feather. Then they found pieces of leather that the local shoemaker gladly gave them. They shaped the wings patiently and carefully so they’d be big and sturdy enough, yet still light for little Florian to carry. It took them several days to finish their masterpiece.

When they finally brought the wings to the forest, Florian was overjoyed. The children helped him strap the wings onto his back, and even though it felt strange and a bit uncomfortable at first, the little dragon was determined to give them a try.

Florian started slowly. At first he only jumped and flapped his new wings. Bit by bit, he grew more confident until one day, when he pushed off the ground harder than ever before, he finally lifted into the air. He rose above the treetops and, to his amazement, realized he could fly! His heart filled with pure joy, and in the sky he shone like a tiny fiery comet.

The children ran after him, laughing, shouting, and waving. Florian swooped back down and landed beside them with a huge grin on his face.
“Thank you, my friends!” he cried.
“Now I can fly!”

“And now it’s my turn to show you the world from above,” Florian said, inviting the children to climb onto his back so they could fly over the land together.

The children agreed with delight. They all held on tight as Florian lifted them into the clouds. They flew over forests, rivers, and mountains, saw animals staring up at them in wonder, and felt the wind rushing through their hair. It was the most beautiful day not only for the little dragon, but for the children as well.

From that day on, Florian and the children became inseparable friends. The little dragon flew every single day, and whenever he felt sad or lonely, all he had to do was remember his friends who had helped him make his biggest dream come true. And the children? They never forgot the day they flew into the clouds on the back of their best friend, the little dragon Florian.

That’s how a friendship was born—so strong that it lasted a whole lifetime. And if you ever see a strange shape gliding across the distant sky, it just might be Florian, soaring over the land with his friends, happy and free.
