The Journey to Farawayland

Two boys leave their quiet village to seek Farawayland and discover that every new place and friend can become a little fairy-tale land of its own.

Somewhere at the very edge of a small village, where every day looked just the same, lived two inseparable friends—Adam and James. They were boys with adventure running in their veins, always longing for something exciting to happen. But in their hometown, nothing ever happened. Mornings were for school, afternoons for tidying the yard, and by evening, everything fell silent as if a magic wand had been waved. Yet Adam and James dreamed that one day, they’d have adventures like the ones you only hear about in stories.

One sunny afternoon, as the two boys sat on the steps of the oldest house in the village, their curiosity led them up to a neglected attic. Under the roof of this old house, all sorts of treasures from times past had piled up—suitcases, forgotten toys, broken tools, and heaps of dusty books. When Adam picked up one of the books, a thick layer of dust fell off, and he noticed a beautiful picture on the cover: a tower of colorful balloons floating high in the clouds, and a big title, “The Journey to Farawayland.” Both boys started leafing through the yellowed pages and read that Farawayland was a legendary country full of fun, games, and endless adventures. In its pictures, they saw magical creatures, beautiful castles, streams full of fish and crayfish weaving between huge, colorful flowers.

Adam and James didn’t hesitate for even a second. Their hearts leaped with joy, for this was exactly what they had been dreaming of. “Let’s go there right now!” James exclaimed. Adam laughed and added, “Our backpacks may be empty, but that just means we’ll travel lighter!” And so, the two fearless friends set off on a long journey—a journey into the unknown—hoping to find a land full of laughter, a land more wonderful than any other.

The path from their village led through a thick forest, where shadows and sunlight flickered between the trees. Though they’d heard scary stories about this forest back in the village, they weren’t afraid. They were sure that somewhere beyond the dark trees was the beginning of the road to Farawayland. Still, they went carefully, watching their steps so as not to trip over roots, while admiring the tall pines in whose branches rust-colored squirrels played. Eventually, they reached a clearing where drops of rain collected in a small well. There, an old hermit with a long grey beard greeted them. Hearing about their journey to Farawayland, he offered to show them the forest paths that would lead them safely onward. The hermit knew all the forest’s hidden nooks and led them between birch trees where fragrant wild strawberries grew. The boys picked handfuls of these sweet red berries and, thus refreshed, continued on their way.

Beyond the forest, they found a river that looked calm, but its undercurrents were dangerous. On its shore, they met Karolinka, a young girl who, as she explained, was traveling the world in search of her own happiness. Karolinka turned out to be an excellent guide on the river, for she had brought along a small inflatable boat. The boys helped her inflate it, and all three set off together.

No sooner had they pushed off from the riverbank than the current began to carry them downstream through the land. The trio enjoyed their river adventure until a strange noise drifted up to them on the wind.

“That’s a waterfall!” James shouted.

They all started paddling frantically to shore and, with luck, managed to reach it just a few meters before the deep waterfall.

“That was a close one!” Karolinka gasped, now smiling.

The boys liked Karolinka, and so they persuaded her to keep traveling with them. Together, they crossed pretty meadows full of blossoming flowers and darting butterflies. Along the way, they talked about why they had set off on such a journey. When Karolinka heard about Farawayland, her eyes lit up: “I’d love to visit, too. I’ve heard there’s always laughter and joy there.”

Adam and James eagerly agreed. After all, things are more fun in threes.

As dusk began to fall, they stumbled upon a beautiful castle. It stood on a small hill whose slopes were sprinkled with colorful herbs. At the gate, a tiny guard greeted them—a knight named Myshimir, with a long feather on his helmet. He explained that the castle had once belonged to kindhearted royal families who loved music and games, but it had been deserted for many years. To help them rest after their long travels, he offered them a night in an ancient chamber with a painted ceiling. That night, the boys and Karolinka slept soundly as if on clouds. In the morning, it all felt like a dream. What stuck most in their minds was Myshimir’s parting wish: “If you find your Farawayland, let me know. I’d love to visit, to remember happy times.”

And so the two friends, now joined by Karolinka, continued on to find their dream country, Farawayland. On the way, they met people who gave them directions and advice. Sometimes it seemed that all they needed to do was go over the next hill and their dreamland would be waiting. Other times, they had to rely on various maps and tips from the attic book. Along the way, they gathered interesting stories, warnings, and advice. Everyone they met was intrigued by the mysterious Farawayland. Though nobody knew exactly where it was, their eyes always lit up at its mention, as if they too longed for a place full of cheerful songs and festivities.

Their travels led them across wide fields, colorful fairs, and stone towns. They experienced moments they’d never forget: helping a lighthouse keeper rescue a lost dog; learning from shepherds how to make cheese and smoked cheese; and joining a street juggler in an old town, tossing bright balls. Everywhere they went, they made new friends. People were happy to share a little of their life and joy with them.

Days passed, but Farawayland still eluded them. Once, they thought they saw its towers from the book illustration in the distance, but when they arrived, there was only an ordinary town with cafes and a marketplace. Another time, someone told them Farawayland was beyond the high mountains, so they climbed the cold peaks—but found only a new valley, beautiful but not like the one from the fairy tale. Finally, they realized that, even though they were still on the road, they’d found so much joy and adventure along the way, it was as though they’d already discovered Farawayland. Every encounter, every kind person, every mysterious place filled them with exactly the happiness they had been searching for all along.

One evening by the fire, they pondered once more where Farawayland might be hiding. Adam looked at Karolinka and James and said, “Maybe… maybe Farawayland isn’t a real country, but simply our idea, our longing for fun.” Karolinka smiled and repeated words she had once heard from an old storyteller: “The path you walk is often more valuable than the destination you seek.” James, who was studying the map, realized that he’d stopped caring about when they might get there. “Yes,” he finally said, “after all, we’ve already had so much fun and met so many wonderful people that it feels like our whole journey is one big adventure.”

And that’s when they understood—they didn’t need to keep searching for a land that may not even exist. What they had felt was missing from their quiet village was travel itself, discovering new places and friends. That evening, sitting around the campfire, they felt happier than ever before. And they looked forward to one day returning home and telling everyone their stories—about the hermit in the forest, about Karolinka who became a loyal friend, about the knight Myshimir with the feather on his helmet, and about all the magical places they’d remember forever.

And even though they never found Farawayland, they replaced it with hundreds of little Farawaylands, hidden everywhere they stopped and listened, where they made new friends or helped someone in need. Eventually, Adam and James returned to their village. Outwardly, nothing had changed—the same houses, same fields, same peace. But the two of them, now with the biggest smiles, knew that any day could be unique if filled with a bit of curiosity and good cheer. And so, whenever they longed for distant lands, they’d pull out their dusty book about Farawayland and leaf through it again. For that book reminded them that the most beautiful journey isn’t the one that takes you to a dreamed-of land, but the one you create in your heart with friends.
