The Fastest Snail

A magical forest fairy tale where the fastest snail learns that cheating ruins the fun and friendship is worth more than any race.

On the edge of a forest, where drops of dew sparkled in the grass and the ground smelled of cool, damp morning, there lived a little group of snails. They weren’t ordinary snails. These snails loved to race! Every spring, when the first warm sunbeams dried the leaves, they lined up at the starting line to find out who among them was the fastest.

For several years in a row, the races had been won by a snail named Sprinter. He was small and plain-looking, with a golden‑brown shell and curious eyes poking out on thin stalks. No one understood how he did it, but Sprinter was always way, way ahead of everyone else. Even Speedy, the snail who thought he was the strongest and toughest of them all, could never keep up with him.

“How do you do it, Sprinter?” the other snails asked him after every victory.

Sprinter just smiled mysteriously and said, “Training and discipline, my friends. You have to practice more.”

So the other snails trained and trained—they climbed taller stems, crossed wider puddles, and practiced even in the rain. But no matter how hard they tried, not one of them could beat Sprinter.

One day, the biggest race of the year was getting close—the Great Forest Snail Marathon. This race was a special event, and animals from all over the forest came to watch. Of course, Sprinter signed up, and all the other snails hoped that this year they would finally manage to defeat him. After all, they had trained faithfully all year long.

But Speedy the snail was suspicious. “Something’s not right,” he told his friends. “I train every single day, and Sprinter is still much faster than I am. We have to find out how he’s doing it.”

Speedy and his friends decided to follow Sprinter during his training. They hid behind leaves, watched his trail, and stared in surprise when he suddenly disappeared. Then one night, right before the race, they saw him crawling toward an old tree stump in a thick patch of bushes. Something strange happened there—Sprinter paused for a moment, then vanished and appeared again several feet farther down the path.

“Aha! He’s taking a shortcut!” Speedy whispered, and the snails decided to uncover the truth. The next morning they came to the starting line, ready not only to race but also to pay close attention.

When the race started, all the snails slid forward as fast as they could, but Sprinter quietly slipped away from the group and headed toward the bushes. Speedy and his friends secretly followed and discovered that Sprinter had a tiny wheel hidden there, just his size, waiting under the leaves! When no one was looking, Sprinter tucked the little wheel under his shell and rolled down the forest path, which made him much, much faster.

By the time the snails reached the finish line, Sprinter was already there—as always, in first place. But this time Speedy spoke up so everyone could hear: “Sprinter, now we know why you’re always so fast. You haven’t been racing fair. We saw your wheel!”

Sprinter’s shell seemed to pale with shame. “Yes, it’s true,” he admitted, lowering his eyes. “I was afraid that if I stopped winning, you wouldn’t like me anymore.”

“Sprinter,” Speedy said gently, “we like you for who you are, not because you win. Cheating isn’t right. It’s not fair, and it ruins the fun for everyone.”

The other snails all agreed. Sprinter apologized and promised he would never cheat again. The Great Forest Snail Marathon started over, and this time the winner was a snail named Chiller—the most patient and determined of them all.

And so the snails learned that cheating never brings real joy, even if you cross the finish line first. In the end, it’s more important to be honest and fair than to always be number one. And Sprinter? From then on, he discovered he loved teaching the younger snails how to enjoy racing—not for the trophies, but for the fun of the journey.
