The Enchanted Castle

A soft, spellbinding bedtime fairy tale about a boy, a poisoned well, and the courage to defeat a serpent and save an enchanted castle.

Imagine a tiny kingdom surrounded by towering mountains and deep, whispering forests. In just such a kingdom lived a poor young man named Matthew. He shared a small, crooked cottage at the edge of a village with his mother and seven younger brothers and sisters. Matthew was clever and full of imagination. Every evening, he would sit on a hill behind the village, gaze up at the stars, and dream of grand adventures.

“One day I’ll do something truly heroic, and everyone will know my name,” he told himself under the glittering sky. But when he mentioned his dreams to his friends, they only laughed at him. “You, a hero? You’re just a poor boy without a father,” they teased. Their words stung, but Matthew refused to give up. Deep down, he believed that fate was saving something great just for him.

One bright morning, he decided to explore the nearby forest. The trees there were so tall that their tops disappeared straight into the clouds. With birds singing all around him, he followed narrow, winding paths until he came upon a cave he had never seen before. Moss covered the entrance, and a cool breath of air drifted out from the darkness within.

Curiosity slowly pushed aside his fear, and Matthew stepped inside. The cave was wide and high, its walls glittering with sparkling crystals. At the very back, he spotted something strange—a large, folded, colorful balloon, tied shut with a ribbon at the end. “Who would leave a balloon like this in here?” he wondered.

He decided to carry it out into the sunlight. When he stepped onto a meadow and loosened the ribbon, the balloon began to fill with warm air. A soft wind brushed past, and the balloon rose, swelling bigger and rounder. Matthew grabbed hold of the ropes, but before he knew it, his feet were lifting off the ground. “Whoa—what’s happening?” he cried in surprise.

Higher and higher the balloon climbed. From above, Matthew watched his village grow smaller and smaller until the houses looked like tiny dots and the forests and fields turned into little patches of color. At first he was terrified. Then a thrilling joy rushed through him. He was flying through the bright air above the clouds, where the sun shone even more brightly and the fresh wind filled his lungs.

After a while, he spotted something incredible in the distance—a magnificent castle floating among the clouds. Around its golden and silver towers flew colorful birds with long, shimmering feathers. The balloon slowly drifted toward the castle and settled down gently in the middle of its courtyard.

Matthew climbed out and looked around in wonder. The courtyard was paved with shining marble, and in the center stood a fountain filled with strange, glimmering water. Everything looked majestic, but the silence was deep and mysterious. “Hello? Is anyone here?” he called. His voice echoed off the stone walls, but no one answered.

He walked through a pair of huge, carved doors into the castle. The halls were lined with beautiful paintings, and crystal chandeliers sparkled with a thousand tiny lights. In one room, he found the castle’s servants. “Good day,” Matthew said with a hopeful smile. But no one replied. When he stepped closer, he realized they were all fast asleep. Quietly, he moved on into a great hall, where knights stood leaning on their swords, helmets tipped forward. They too were lost in a deep, unbroken sleep.

At last, he reached the throne room. On a golden throne sat a king wearing a crown, and beside him a beautiful princess in a gown that shimmered with every color of the dawn. Both of them slept calmly, as if no trouble in the world could touch them. Matthew had no idea what was going on. “Why is everyone sleeping?” he wondered aloud.

Determined to solve the mystery, he searched the castle from top to bottom until he discovered an old library filled with dusty books. One of them caught his eye—a great chronicle of the castle, telling the story of a curse placed upon it by a poisonous serpent. The serpent had crept into the castle well and poisoned the water. Everyone who drank from it fell into a deep sleep from which there was no waking.

Matthew realized he would have to find the serpent and destroy it to break the spell. He hurried out to the castle garden, where the well stood surrounded by rosebushes heavy with blooms. As he drew near, he heard a low, sinister hissing. From the dark depths of the well, two glowing red eyes stared up at him. Without hesitating, he grabbed a large stone from the ground and braced himself. When the serpent slid up over the edge of the well, Matthew hurled the stone with perfect aim. The serpent hissed sharply and tumbled back into the depths. A moment later, the water in the well began to clear, turning bright, crystal blue.

At that very instant, the castle began to wake. Servants stretched and yawned, knights rubbed their eyes and stood up straight, and the king and princess looked around in confusion. “What happened?” they asked one another, bewildered.

When they heard about Matthew’s brave deed, the king stepped forward to meet him. “Young man, you have saved us from an endless sleep. How can we ever repay you?” he asked.

Matthew answered modestly, “I’m just glad I could help. That’s the greatest reward I could ask for.”

The king smiled warmly. “Your courage and your humility are truly remarkable. I offer you my daughter’s hand in marriage and a place by my side as prince of this kingdom.”

The princess gave Matthew a gentle smile, and he felt his heart blaze with joy. “I would be honored,” he said.

The grand wedding was held the very next day, and before the sun had set, they all traveled down together to Matthew’s village. When the villagers saw Matthew in the company of the king and the princess, they could hardly believe their eyes. “Matthew, is that really you?” they shouted. “We’re sorry we made fun of you.”

Matthew forgave them, and together they celebrated his return. From that day on, Matthew was known as the hero who saved the enchanted castle. And the villagers learned that you should never underestimate a person’s dreams and determination—no matter who they are or where they come from.
