The Vain Chameleon

Inspiring fairy tale about a chameleon who must perform three good deeds to earn back his colors and learns humility, courage, and gratitude.

Namysleny Chameleon Rozpravka

Once upon a time, in a green jungle where trees stretched up to the sky and birds sang the sweetest melodies, there lived a chameleon named Kiko. This little chameleon had an amazing gift: he could change the color of his skin. All the animals in the jungle admired him. The more creatures came to watch him shimmer and shift, the prouder Kiko became. His fame went straight to his head, and soon anyone who wanted to see his “color show” had to pay him—with the juiciest fruit they could find.

It went on like this until one day his gift simply… vanished. No matter how hard he tried, Kiko couldn’t match the colors around him anymore. He stayed the same dull gray, and the animals lost interest in him. Kiko was desperate. For a chameleon, changing colors wasn’t just about looking pretty—it was how he stayed safe. Without his colors, he couldn’t hide from hungry predators, and he felt completely helpless. He knew he had to find someone who might be able to help.

It didn’t take long before he reached an old hollow tree, where he ran into Oliver the snake. Oliver was one of the oldest animals in the jungle. He had seen a lot, heard even more, and remembered almost everything. “Oliver, please, help me,” Kiko said, his eyes full of sadness.

“I lost my ability to change colors. I don’t know what to do.” Oliver thought for a moment and then replied, “I believe I can help you, Kiko. But it won’t be easy. You must perform three deeds that are bigger than your pride.”

“But what kind of deeds?” the little chameleon asked, wide-eyed and curious.
“That I cannot tell you,” Oliver hissed gently.
“You have to discover them on your own.” Kiko knew this would be a difficult journey, but he was determined to earn his gift back. He thanked Oliver and set off into the jungle.

All day long, Kiko wandered and wondered what kind of deeds he was supposed to do. Should they be brave? Funny? Clever? He thought and thought when suddenly he heard someone crying in a nearby bush. He crept closer and peeked through the leaves. There, huddled and shaking, he found a tiny bat with huge, teary eyes.
“Why are you crying here all alone, little bat?” Kiko asked softly.

“I’m far from the cave where I live with my parents and my brothers and sisters,” the bat sobbed.
“I hurt my wing, and I don’t know how to get home.” Kiko didn’t hesitate for even a second.

He gently lifted the bat onto his back and carried him through the jungle, step by careful step, all the way to the cave. The journey was long and tiring, but Kiko knew he had to help. When the parents saw their son, they were overjoyed. They had been searching for him all day, afraid they had lost him forever. Out of gratitude, they gave Kiko a small gemstone from deep inside their cave. Kiko thanked them for the gift and continued his journey, still searching for the mysterious deeds that would break his pride.

He decided to climb to the highest peak in the jungle to look around and see if there was a place where he could do another good deed. At the top, he found a desperate eagle. A storm had torn his nest to pieces, and soon his mate would return so their eggs could hatch. The eagle didn’t even have time to ask for help before Kiko rushed into action. He began dragging branches and twigs, laying them carefully in a large circle. Then he gathered armfuls of soft moss and silky grass to line the new nest. When Kiko finally finished, the eagle was deeply moved.

“You have a kind heart, little chameleon,” he said. To thank him, the eagle gave Kiko his largest, most beautiful feather.

Exhausted, Kiko decided to rest by the river. As he lay there, he suddenly noticed a turtle in the middle of the water, struggling for her life. She was tangled in a fisherman’s net and couldn’t get free. Even though Kiko hated water, he didn’t stop to think. He jumped into the river, swam out to the turtle, and began gnawing at the ropes with his tiny teeth. Bit by bit, the net came apart. At last, the turtle was free, and together they swam back to the shore.

“Thank you, brave chameleon,” said the turtle happily. “For your courage, I’ll give you this silver scale from a rare fish.”

Worn out, Kiko accepted the gift and collapsed on the riverbank. Thinking about what else he might need to do to earn his colors back, he slowly drifted off to sleep. Suddenly, a strange feeling woke him up. It was night, and the full moon was shining straight down on him. Kiko had an idea. He took out all the gifts he had received for his good deeds: the gemstone from the cave, the great eagle feather, and the silver fish scale. As the moonlight touched them, colors began to pour out—every shade you can imagine. Red like ripe berries, blue like deep water, green like fresh leaves, gold like sunlight.

The little chameleon felt something stir inside him. His body began to tingle and change. Color after color flowed across his skin, and once again he could blend perfectly with the world around him. Kiko felt happy—and deeply grateful. He had learned that in life, it is far more important to want to help others than to show off your own colors. With this lesson shining in his heart, he returned to his part of the jungle, where he became a true hero to all its creatures.

And although he never forgot what he had gone through, he knew that with the right attitude—and with the help of friends—he could face any challenge that crossed his path. And if you ever walk through a jungle and you think you see a leaf move, or a rock suddenly change its shade, take a closer look. It just might be Kiko, quietly smiling, his colors glowing softly in the light.
